🏊♀️ Gold rush for Australia in the pool
This is Mollie O’Callaghan’s world and we’re just living in it.
Golden points: Very golden points. The Aussie teenager is a superstar after she flew home to win gold in the 100m freestyle at the Swimming World Championships this morning.
The 18yo was back in 6th at the halfway mark but worked her way through the competition to hit the lead with about 3 strokes to go.
It was a golden day for Australia because Zac Stubblety-Cook took our gold medal tally to 4 when he won the 200m breaststroke.
This guy knows how to play it cool. He chilled for a couple of laps and then went bang to add another medal to his Olympic gold.
Australia also picked up silver in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay and Jenna Stauch won silver as well in the women's 200m breaststroke final.
They said it: "Shocking, it was bad, the worst ever. I was panicking in warm-up, I had a little bit of a cramp in my leg. I was just feeling dizzy, I just felt out of it in warm-up and I started to panic a little." - O'Callaghan put aside the pre-race nerves to get the gold.
Watch it: Those early starts in winter were worth it for O’Callaghan. How good is this!
🏉 Sky Blues hope to rain on Queensland's parade
We’d usually be in tears if you told us there was a weekend with no NRL in June. But these are happy tears because there's a footy feast that everyone can enjoy.
Golden points: We’ve got international footy in New Zealand for the first time in years, there are Tests in Sydney and of course, the men’s State of Origin on Sunday. But forget about that for a bit because tonight’s game is going to be intense.
There are no 2nd chances in women’s Origin. There’s one game and it’s winner take all. Although, that will change next year when it becomes a 2-game series.
Last year’s game on the Sunshine Coast still irks NSW after the Maroons were awarded a late penalty to win 8-6.
It means the Queenslanders have won the past 2 games. That’s why the Sky Blues have brought in some new faces to win back the shield.
Watch it: Canberra is gonna be pretty frosty tonight so you can rug up and watch the game on Channel 9 and Foxtel from 7.45pm (AEST). To get you in the mood, check out this 109m try by Blues fullback Jada Taylor in the women's Under-19s State of Origin last night.
🎾 Coaching is no longer out of bounds
Tennis is about to introduce a major rule change, and Nick Kyrgios is not a fan.
Golden points: Coaching during matches has always been against the rules, but the ATP - that’s the men’s tennis tour - will start trialling it once Wimbledon finishes in a couple of weeks.
We’re not talking on-court huddles. Coaches must sit in designated seats and the conversations can only be short and sharp.
Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou says it’s a great decision because it’s been going on for years. That’s awkward because that was a hot topic at the 2018 US Open.
But not everyone agrees. In fact, Kyrgios thinks the idea is ridiculous.
They said it: “Completely disagree. Loses one of the only unique traits that no other sport had. The player had to figure out things on his own. That was the beauty of it.” - Kyrgios tweeted his disapproval.
🏀 Draft day will have an Aussie flavour
Aussies were getting Giddey about Josh after last year’s NBA Draft. Now we’re being sucked in by the hype around Dyson Daniels.
Golden points: The 19yo looks really good. That’s why he’s been tipped to go as high as #6 in today’s draft.
That’d be a massive moment in his career because Daniels would get at least $5 million if he’s picked in the top 10.
This kid is tall, he’s already played for the national team and has had experience in the 2nd-tier comp in the States.
It’s unlikely he’ll be picked first. Experts reckon the #1 pick will either be Jabari Smith or Chet Holmgren. There'll be plenty of pressure on them from the get-go.
Key click: Here’s everything you need to know about today’s draft in Brooklyn.
Watch it: Come for the fashion and stay for the emotional moments when the draft starts at 10.00am (AEST) on Foxtel and Kayo.
🏆 Which brings us to today's trivia question...
Who was the #1 pick at the 2021 NBA Draft?
Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.
🥅 Lightning coach storms out
It wouldn’t be a finals series without a little bit of drama.
Golden points: The Lightning are skating on thin ice and are just one loss away from handing over the Stanley Cup. But were they dudded in game 4?
Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper thinks they were. He answered one question in his presser and stormed out. He wasn’t happy.
And you can see why. Colorado’s Nazem Kadri scored the winner in overtime even if no one realised the puck had actually gone in.
But replays showed the Avalanche had 6 guys on the ice when he scored. That can happen if you’re making a substitution, but even the official score sheet from the NHL had 6 players listed when the puck went it.
What’s next: The Avalanche need one more win to lift the Stanley Cup for the first time in 21 years. They can do it at home tomorrow at 10.00am (AEST).
Watch it: Forget the drama for a sec. Here’s the goal that won it. Where did the puck go?
👀 Quick singles
🏊♀️ All is well after an artistic swimmer lost consciousness in the water. American Anita Alvarez had to be saved by her coach but fortunately she's doing well.
🏐 The Vixens have suffered a major blow ahead of tomorrow’s Super Netball prelim final. The minor premiers will be without star shooter Kiera Austin for the grand final qualifier against the Giants.
🎾 Aussie Alex de Minaur is through to the semis at Eastbourne. But Serena Williams' return to tennis is over after playing partner Ons Jabeur had to withdraw from their doubles match with a knee injury.
🏏 There’s a new cricket comp starting in the West Indies, and, fair to say, it’s a little bit different. The 6ixty starts in August and has more than a few wacky rules to keep people entertained.
🏀 The Perth Wildcats are looking for a new coach. Scott Morrison - not the one you’re thinking of - is heading back to the States due to personal reasons after one year in charge.
⚽ Eight people who looked after Diego Maradona before his death are facing criminal charges in Argentina. They are facing up to 25 years in jail for allegedly failing to look after one of the greatest footballers of all time.
🏉 The AFL wants to entertain you. They are reportedly trying to get Robbie Williams to headline this year’s grand final entertainment.
🙃 Left of field...
You can’t beat chicken and chips to end the working week. Well, maybe you can if you’re a poker player.
Golden points: Yuliyan Kolev can shout us all dinner after he won the Millionaire Maker No-Limit Hold’em event at the World Series of Poker. Yep, he’s now a millionaire.
Maybe he can buy a new hat to replace the KFC bucket he and his mates wore at the final table. Yeah, that’s right, a KFC bucket.
We’ve all seen poker players wear sunnies or hoodies to make it harder for their opponents to read them. But it looks like buckets also work.
He says he wore the bucket in tribute to singer Buckethead, and says wearing it made him feel like he had super powers.
Kolev was down to one poker chip at one stage but fought back to win the final hand with pocket aces. That’s the best starting hand if you’re new to the game.
Watch it: Did someone say pocket aces? Winner winner, chicken dinner.
📽 The highlight reel
You won't see a more bizarre dismissal in cricket this year. Kiwi batter Daryl Mitchell has been middling the ball all series against England, but on this occasion it cost his teammate Henry Nicholls. Reminds us of this similar dismissal involving Andrew Symonds and Michael Clarke.
📸 Photo finish
Don't doubt the Demons. The defending premiers snapped a losing streak and are back on top of the AFL ladder after a huge win over the Lions last night.
