🥇 Kyle Wins In Style

Oh hi, it's Tuesday, 2 August. It's another great day for Aussie sports fans. The Commonwealth Games team has dominated once again in Birmingham, this time in the pool, on the track, on the mat, in the air and on the green. There's also plenty of other non-Comm Games news, so whatever floats your boat, we got you covered. Actually, no gold medals on the sea ... yet. We'll look into that, by right now, let's get into it.

THE MAIN GAME

🥇Chalmers wins despite media spin

Star Aussie swimmer Kyle Chalmers won his 3rd gold medal of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games this morning but says his ongoing fight with the media means it's hard to enjoy.

Golden points: Chalmers won the men's 100m freestyle final this morning and gave it one of these ones 🤫 after he finished.

  • The context behind the celebration has to do with Chalmers' issue with the media outlets that reported a rift between himself, his ex-partner Emma McKeon and new partner Cody Simpson.

  • Chalmers called those reports false news and considered pulling out of the Games and getting on the first plane home. But he said he spoke to his brother and his mum, and decided to race because quitting would have "let the media win".

  • Chalmers won one of 9 gold medals for Australia on Day 4 of the Games across a wide range of sports.

  • In the pool, Emma McKeon made it a dozen Comm Games gold medals with victory in the 50m butterfly, Kaylee McKeown won the 200m backstroke final, the men's 4x200m relay team got the win and para-athlete Matthew Levy won the men’s 50m freestyle S7 in the last race of his career.

  • Ellen Ryan mounted an epic comeback to win the women's singles lawn bowls final, Georgia Godwin won her second gold of the Games (this time on the vault), track cyclist Matthew Glaetzer defended his gold in the 1000m time trial and Tinka Easton won Australia's first judo gold medal in 20 years in the 52kg division.

They said it: "You don’t start your career thinking you will go on as long as I have and as a 12-year-old I never thought I would go to 5 Paralympics or to Commonwealth games, let alone go to one. I think that is the biggest highlight for me," says Levy, who was born 15 weeks prematurely with cerebral palsy and a vision impairment and has survived more than 50 operations to become one of Australia's great para-athletes.

QUICK SINGLES

🏉 AFL: David Mundy was going to kick on but now he's hanging up the boots. Fremantle's most-capped player with 371 matches once said he'd keep on playing until the club kicked him out, but yesterday he announced his 19th season will be his last. "I feel I’ve grown from a skinny full-back who didn’t want to talk to anyone, to being a part of the leadership group for a number of years now," says Mundy, who is proud of his development as a person with Dockers.

🚣‍♀️ Paddling: Queen of extreme paddling Jess Fox wins more World Cup gold. Fox defended her extreme kayak world title and won silver in the comparatively tame canoe and kayak events at the World Cup meet in Augsburg, Germany on the weekend. Extreme kayak, the event where four paddlers are dropped into the water, race through gates and roll underwater, will debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics and Fox is the favourite to win gold.

🎾 Tennis: 'The Demon' is roaring ahead of the US Open with a 6th ATP win in Atlanta. Australia's top-ranked men's tennis player, Alex 'The Demon' de Minaur, won the Atlanta Open yesterday. It was the 2nd time he's won the AO (not that one), and it means his ranking will go up to #21 in the world and should get him a nice, high seed at the US Open. While we're on nicknames, the Special Ks, Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis won the men's doubles in Atlanta over breakfast yesterday.

🏎 F1: Aston Martin has wasted no time in replacing retiring driver Sebastian Vettel for next season. Dual F1 champion Fernando Alonso will leave Alpine and take Vettel's spot at Aston Martin in 2023 on a multi-year deal. That's pretty big news, but what's even bigger is that Aussie young gun Oscar Piastri is now in pole position (sorry) to replace Alonso. It's like musical chairs at 300kph!

🏉 NRL: Brisbane Broncos forward Patrick Carrigan faces a lengthy ban at the NRL judiciary tonight for hip-dropping it like it's hot. Carrigan broke Wests Tigers playmaker Jackson Hastings ankle with a hip-drop tackle on Saturday night and he's been referred straight to the judiciary. He could miss the remainder of the regular season if he gets a 5-week ban, which would be a huge blow to Brisbane's hopes of making the top 4.

LEFT OF FIELD

🥇 Comm Games: Yesterday, Australia won the women's rugby 7s gold medal at the Comm Games, beating Fiji 22-12 in the final. It was a massive moment for sisters Maddison and Teagan Levi to win gold together, it was also a pretty massive morning for their proud mum, Richelle. Maddison said her mum had a bottle of champagne ready to go at 6am on the Gold Coast and confirmed there were lots of tears and lots of swearing when they spoke after the game. If there was any doubt if that champagne was popped, a Channel 7 TV interviewed Richelle, who said two bottles of champers were already gone just before 9am. That's what we call a champagne breakfast of champions' mum.
