⚽ History repeats as Man City finish first
They say the sequel is never as good as the original. Well, that’s not always the case.
The score: Manchester City defeated Aston Villa 3-2.
Golden points: Look away Liverpool fans. Manchester City are English Premier League champions after a wild morning of results to finish a point clear of the Reds.
There is something special about 3-2 for City fans. It’s been 10 years since Sergio Aguero scored in stoppage time to beat QPR on the final day to win the EPL, and it’s happened again.
They didn’t leave it that late, but they were down 2-0 to Villa when all they had to do was win to lift the trophy.
Up stepped İlkay Gündoğan who came on in the 68th minute and became the hero. He scored 2 of City’s 3 goals in a wicked 5-minute burst to turn disaster into wild celebrations.
The win means they finished ahead of Liverpool who also came back to beat Wolves 3-1.
What are the chances… there’s more drama? Well, there was a lot going on at the bottom of the table. Leeds scored in the 94th minute to beat Brentford. It means they're safe and 3 points clear of Burnley who are relegated.
Watch it: City Manager Pep Guardiola will never forget this day.
⚽ Better late than never for City fans
It must be nice to be the City Football Group. Manchester City’s win came less than 24 hours after Melbourne City advanced to the A-League Men’s grand final.
Golden points: Those owners would’ve been sweating because the defending champs were in trouble yesterday. It turns out all City teams save their best until the end.
The match at AAMI Park finished 1-1 but it didn’t take long for City to strike in extra time. Jamie Maclaren scored in the 92nd minute to seal the 2-1 win over Adelaide United.
It sets up an all-Melbourne final, but not the one people were expecting.
That’s after Western United piled on the goals to upset Melbourne Victory 4-1 in the 2nd leg of their semi-final.
What’s next: Melbourne will be buzzing ahead of the final on Saturday at AAMI Park.
Watch it: Better later than never. Here are the highlights from yesterday’s comeback.
⚽ Carpenter has the heart of a Lyon
We’d be lyin’ if we said we weren’t stoked to see Lyon win the UEFA Women’s Champions League because it means more success for our Aussies.
Golden points: But this one had a bittersweet ending because Ellie Carpenter was forced off with a serious knee injury after 13 minutes.
She hurt it in an earlier tackle and stayed on, but her knee eventually gave way.
The early diagnosis is that she’s injured the ACL in her left knee, which would mean she’s out for up to a year. That’s not ideal because the Matildas play Spain and Portugal next month.
But back to the positives. Carpenter has a shiny new medal because Lyon beat Barcelona 3-1 in the final. It’s the 8th time in 12 years they’ve won the Champions League. And they scored one of the great goals.
Watch it: She didn’t finish the game, but check out how quickly Carpenter got back on the field at full-time to celebrate.
🏊♀️ Ariarne's grande swim has her in the record books
Move over James Bond. The 007 era is over because all that matters now is 0.06 after Ariarne Titmus broke a long-standing world record by less than a 10th of a second.
Golden points: It was the highlight on the final night of the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide, and it continues her incredible rivalry with Katie Ledecky.
The American set the 400m freestyle world record at the 2016 Olympics but Titmus has it now after a time of 3:56:40 last night.
The scenes in the pool were only matched by her coach in the stands. Dean Boxall absolutely lost it like he did in Tokyo.
Watch it: Enjoy the race as much as Boxall, if that's possible.
⛳ Injury ends Tiger's incredible streak
His comeback to golf has been one of the sport’s biggest stories, but the serious injuries he suffered in last year’s car crash were too much for Tiger Woods yesterday.
Golden points: The 46yo did well to make the cut at the US PGA Championship but he didn’t play the final round today after he withdrew from the event.
This is a bit different to us mere mortals who don’t go to the gym because it’s too cold. Woods is playing just his 2nd event since he nearly had his leg amputated, and the conditions in Tulsa made it too uncomfortable for him to continue.
It must have been really bad because Woods had never withdrawn from a major event as a professional before yesterday.
He was +9 in his 3rd round and 21 shots behind Chile’s Mito Pereira.
What’s next: We're not sure. He hasn’t committed to the US Open next month, but he says he’ll play in the British Open in July.
🏆 Which brings us to today's trivia question...
When was the last time Tiger Woods won the PGA Championship?
Answer at the bottom of the newsletter.
🏁 Max delight as Ferrari falters
The ecstasy for Red Bull could only be matched by Ferrari’s agony in Spain last night.
Golden points: Max Verstappen is back on top of the Formula 1 standings, but even the defending champ thought he was no hope in Barcelona.
That’s because Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was cruising to victory before his car suffered a power unit failure. He didn’t finish the race.
Verstappen probably needs to buy teammate Sergio Pérez a drink after Red Bull bosses ordered the Mexican driver to slow down to let his teammate get maximum points.
Aussie Daniel Ricciardo continues to struggle. He finished 12th.
They said it: “I’m happy for the team, but we need to speak later.” - Pérez has a few questions by the sounds of it.
What’s next: There’s no time to bicker because the Monaco GP is on Sunday.
👀 Quick singles
🎾 Aussie Jason Kubler is through to the 2nd round of the French Open after the biggest win of his career. There were some massive upsets in the women's draw on the first day of competition.
🏁 Cam Waters capped a great weekend at Winton with his 2nd Supercars race win yesterday. He beat defending champ Shane van Gisbergen to move up to 3rd in the standings.
🏐 The West Coast Fever keep breaking records in the Super Netball. They posted the highest score in the comp’s history with an 86-77 win over the Giants thanks to 66 goals to Jhaniele Fowler.
🏉 There were a few upsets in the AFL over the weekend, but none bigger than Hawthorn's win over Brisbane. It snapped a 4-game losing streak by the Hawks and was just Brisbane's 2nd loss of the season.
⚽ Everyone who thought Kylian Mbappé was off to Real Madrid needs to check their sources. He knocked back a massive offer to sign a new deal with PSG for the next 3 seasons.
🏉 The Waratahs have broken their NZ hoodoo, winning across the ditch for the first time since 2015. The win over the Highlanders has them in 6th spot with one round to go in the Super Rugby Pacific.
🏉 The Aussie women fell just short in the final of the rugby sevens event in Toulouse. They were beaten 21-14 by New Zealand, but it doesn’t really matter because they’d already wrapped up the world title.
🙃 Left of field...
Call off the 2033 draft because we’ve already found the AFL’s next star.
Golden points: Half-time at the footy usually means a quick toilet break or a chance to spend a bit of time lining up for hot chips and a pie. But why leave your seats when the entertainment is this good.
A young kid stole the show at the Dreamtime at the ‘G game between Richmond and Essendon with some outrageous plays during the break.
The Auskick kid is a social media sensation after he kicked 2 cracking goals.
He won’t need much media training. He revved up the crowd after his first goal and then booted the ball into the MCG stands after the next one.
Watch it: The step, the fend, the snap. The kid has it all.
📽 The highlight reel
Poor Alex Twal. He's still waiting for an NRL try after 100 games. And to rub it in, former rugby sevens star Lachie Miller scored this 80-metre beauty on debut for the Sharks.
📸 Photo finish
Winners are grinners. There's a fair bit of talent in this photo. No wonder Glenn Maxwell, Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis are celebrating after the Royal Challengers Bangalore snuck into the Indian Premier League finals.

🏆 Today's trivia answer
Woods won it for the 4th time in 2007.
